Don't Pick A Job. Pick A Boss

Don't pick a job. Pick a boss. An important quote for employees especially at the beginning of career. This quote is simple but it contains esoteric meaning.

Competency and multitasking are the basic requirements to land a decent job in globalisation era. However, picking the right boss is important to ensure you have the opportunity to grow. The right boss understands subordinates and guides them to be a leader. Training opportunity or self-improvement programme is provided to enhance knowledge in various subjects. Project involvement to develop subordinates' practical knowledge. Promote subordinate to higher rank.

It is easy to talk or write. However, not easy to find the right boss. These following opinions might be useful to you in searching the right boss:-

1. Research
- A simple way to conduct research is type your boss name on the search engine website. LinkedIn provides useful information about career, achievement, education, skills and comments. News is significant to take note as well.
- Ask what people know about your boss. Generally, senior colleagues understands your boss since they work for the company longer than you. If you haven't join the company, search through your network. However, comments are subjective and filtration is required.

2. Study your boss
- Communicate frequently and build relationship with your boss. A good relationship is the best way to know a person.
- Observe his characters, attitudes and abilities.

3. The company
- Search information such as the company's objectives, policy, present financial status, projects status & planning, and previous promotion records. These information correlate to your promotion and increment.

4. Your career objective
- It is about matching your career objective with the right boss. Career objective might change after a period of time. Working with the right boss at the right time is something to think about.

Every boss is unique just like employee. A boss who is willing to promote an employee might not suits that employee. Understand yourself. What do you want to achieve in next 3 to 4 years? Is the boss able to assist you in achieving this goal? If your answer is yes, he/she might be the right boss.

Picking the right boss is not easy. Wish you all the best!

Kangwee's corner (26 October 2015, Monday)

I was thinking should I use the word "restart" for the post title. Maybe not.

The last post on Kangwee's corner was "making sure everything is alright.. keke" on 14 February 2011, Monday. It was about a proposed to my ex-girlfriend, presently my wife. Her decision to choose this "simple man" as husband makes my life wonderful. I got her a small size diamond engagement ring which I could afford. The size of the diamond doesn't matter to her. However, her tears matter to me, I love her.

In year 2012, we married and started our family. At the beginning, we had to stay at my parents' house. My parents provided a small room and it was beautified with wedding decoration mostly in red. A red paper written with "麒麟到此 meaning Kirin has arrived" was pasted at the top of the door. Wedding decoration stickers on the cabinets, lamps, bed, pillows, curtains are red in colours. On the wedding day, relatives and friends witnessed our marriage. We were exhausted after the wedding day.

My parents encouraged us to purchase a house. To pay the mortgage is simple, to get the right house is not. After 5 months of searching a house, 9 months of legal property transfer, 3 months of renovation, finally we entered the house in October 2013. However, it was not an important event to us. Expecting a baby girl in December was the exciting news. We are lucky to have this adorable daughter. Two years later, we have a son.

I told my wife, "After married, I have you, a house, a daughter and a son. I'm having a good luck."
